Laurent Fignon
Here is a clip of the master tactician in the '92 Tour. You can watch him ride away from the likes of Zulle, Delgado, Indurain, and everyone else in the peleton (its in French, but you 'll get it). Check out the big ring...that isn't a compact, WOW, that is power! For me he was an inspiration, (look at that pony tail), he was always on the attack, even when the odds were against him. The glasses earned him the nick name the Profesor, smart, cagie, and always attentive. He will for ever be remebered for the epic battle in '89 with Greg LeMond. For the record, he was one of the fastest man on 2 wheels, and here are a few of the wins:
One-day races:
French National Road Race Championships, 1984
Milan-Sanremo, 1988 and 1989
La Fleche Wallonne, 1986
Morbihan Grand Prix, 1983
Paris-Camembert, 1988
Grand Prix des Nations, 1989
Stage races:
Criterium International, 1982 and 1990
Tour of Sicily, 1985
Tour of the Netherlands, 1989
Ruta de Mexico, 1993
Grand tours:
Tour de France, 1983 and 1984; 2nd in 1989; nine stages; yellow jersey for
22 days
Giro d’Italia, 1989; 2nd in 1984; two stages; best climber in 1984; pink
jersey for 15 days
Vuelta a España, 3rd in 1987; two stages
If you want to see a World Class Champion, watch some of the footage of this man. If you don't race, you will want to, if you do race, take notes because the Professor is in! God Speed Laurent!
